Hola, Hello, Bonjour

A Bit About Me

My name is Georgina Garcia. I am in my fourth year of the Early Childhood Studies program at Toronto Metropolitan University.

I have previously worked with children as a caregiver assistant and registered childhood educator in childcare centres and a Montessori school in Vaughan, Toronto and Mississauga. In addition, I volunteered in a children’s camp in the USA for seven consecutive years and organized and directed a children’s camp in Mexico City. As a Radiant Child Yoga Program trainer, I have trained parents interested in teaching yoga internationally. I have been working and volunteering with several organizations serving children at risk and with different abilities since 1997. I am a retired professional dancer, yoga instructor, Montessori guide and a Registered Early Childhood Educator in Canada. In addition, I speak Spanish and English, and I am learning French. I will be happy if I can bring my interests to you.

Learning Plans

Tripod Grasp Activity

Children attached clips covered with penguins and snowflakes to pieces of paper simulating snow blocks. The blocks with the penguins were then attached to a winter landscape.

With this activity, the children strengthened their hand muscles to give them skills in using colours and pencils, using their fingers to change their clothes, tying their shoes, and so on.

Students were engaged during the activity, helping them to learn an important skill. In addition, the activity was relevant to the student’s interests.

Practicing Yoga Activity

On snowy days, children do Yoga instead of going outside to start the day. It is good practice for gross motor skills, apart from all the benefits of this discipline.

Children practiced Yoga following the Yoga Mountain Story (Kaur, 1998). Apart from gross motor skills, children will increase levels of activity and endurance (skill 5.1 (Ontario, 2014)). The exercise included specific verbal and behavioural strategies from different pedagogical philosophies, including Montessori teachings, in their yoga classes.

It was an engaging and interactive activity for children. Children actively participated and enjoyed themselves.

Cutting and Paste Activity

Cutting was a new way to do crafts, and children enjoyed making different paper figures. According to Florian & Spratt (2013), different options must be available to everybody rather than categorizing learners and giving them different options. After the children cut the paper, they decorated it with pompoms, pipe cleaners, and feathers.

Being Kind Activity

Children are in the process of recognizing their emotions and recognizing others. The next part is to know what to do with this information. According to Litchford, A. (2018) from Utah State University, kindness helps build social bonds and increase trust and acceptance in our relationships. The activity promoted kindness. According to How Does Learning Happen (Ontario, 2014), educators will Nurture Healthy Development and Well-Being. Program expectation is: Early childhood programs nurture children’s healthy development and support their growing sense of self.
